The Kolpa river has created several gorges, which are more than 200 metres deep in its upper course, and the demanding rapids near the village of Osilnica attract experienced canoeists from all corners of the world. Boating, fishing, swimming and camping are the predominant forms of recreation in this spectacular valley.
The Kolpa river is one of the most unspoiled watercourses in Slovenia. The most common fish in its waters are the brown trout (salmo trutta), grayling (thymallus thymallus), rainbow trout (oncorhynchus mykiss) and Danube salmon (hucho hucho) and Carp. Fly-fishing is permitted on the Kolpa river from 1 April to 1 September, with a fly rod with a single fly.
During the same time fishing is permitted on the Čabranka with a float and a single fly, with lures and of course with a fly rod. Wild salmon can only be caught in winter. There are also various types of crabs: anstropotamobius crabs and broad-fingered crayfish (astacus astacus). The presence of crustaceans in these waters testifies to their exceptional purity.
